They are an extremely life like robot that was built by the old owner of the lab- He's so life like he even has mechanical organs that mimic real ones. Damage to their body is extremely dangerous due to this, but he can be repaired. Despite being so life like, he's also noticeably a robot with his face and other limbs. He's mistaken for a cyborg however.
He was basically someone's attempt at "playing god"- Someone who wanted to create life from scratch. He started out as a baby and grew with time, but had to be constantly modified as he outgrew his own body and started to break apart- The only issue with a "living robot" is his mechanical parts can't grow with him. He's an adult now and no long is at risk of breaking apart from growth though. If he was to ever "stop functioning" repairing the body would actually not bring him back, you'd only have a mindless robot. This is due to them having a soul which would leave the body just like a normal death.
Despite being quite literally alive, he still speaks a bit like you'd expect a robot to at times.
